How To Find Your Personal Style And Build Your Perfect Wardrobe

Tip #1: Invest In Basics

How to find your personal style, Los Angeles personal stylist

In my twenties, I spent years buying clothes I barely wore, cycling through trends, filling my closet, and constantly feeling like I had nothing to wear. Everything changed when I started doing one simple thing: investing in basics. For years, I focused on statement pieces, prints, and trends while avoiding basics. But getting dressed became so much easier once I realized the value of high-quality basics that could mix and match with everything else in my closet. Investing in timeless, well-made essentials that fit your unique style and life is one of the most important steps toward building a perfect wardrobe.

Tip #2: Stop Chasing Trends

Stop chasing trends. That doesn’t mean you can’t bring one or two into your wardrobe each season if you enjoy them, but feeling like you need every new trend to stay current only leads to frustration. Instead, focus on what you genuinely like and what makes you feel your best. This can be a certain silhouette, color, or style.

Trends can be fun to experiment with, especially when you’re still discovering your personal style. But at a certain point, it becomes more valuable to understand what truly works for you, rather than waiting for the next trend to dictate your choices. Building a wardrobe around what you love will always outlast whatever’s trending.

Tip #3: Know Your Brands

love your wardrobe

I’ve worked with many petite women who struggle to find clothes that fit and end up compromising their non-negotiables. Or they’ll buy pieces that technically fit but aren’t in a style, color, or silhouette they feel confident in. That’s why knowing your go-to clothing brands can make such a difference.

For example, when I work with petite clients, I recommend certain brands that cater to their proportions, even if they don’t offer dedicated petite sizing. And when I work with teens, the brands I suggest are completely different from the ones I recommend for women in their 30s, 40s, or beyond. Having a list of reliable brands that consistently work for you can eliminate a lot of stress and frustration when shopping.

Tip #4: Focus On The Fit

How to find your personal style

Focusing on fit is one of the most important parts of building your perfect wardrobe. A wardrobe that truly works for you is one where every piece fits your body. If an item isn’t worth the cost or effort of tailoring, it’s probably not worth adding to your closet in the first place.

If you’re holding on to clothes that don’t fit at the moment but you’re not ready to part with, store them somewhere less visible, like the back of your closet or in a bin. You can always reassess later. But for now, if your goal is to get dressed effortlessly and feel confident every day, make sure the pieces front and center in your closet are the ones that fit you well and make you feel good.

Tip #5: What Are Your Non-Negotiables

How to find your style

What are three things an item must have to stay in your closet, or be considered before you buy it? These are your criteria, your non-negotiables. For me, my non-negotiables are simple. First, an item has to fit my body well, or I have to be willing to get it tailored. Second, it has to align with my personal style—it needs to feel authentic to who I am. And third, it must be high quality. If something isn’t made from good fabric, I know I won’t wear it because it won’t feel good on my skin.

Ask yourself: what are your three nonnegotiables? A great way to figure this out is to look at your three favorite go-to pieces. If you’re home, grab them from your closet. If not, picture them in your mind. What do they have in common? Is it the color, the fit, the silhouette, the quality, or the overall style? Those shared traits are likely your non-negotiables. When you stay true to your personal criteria and only keep or buy pieces that meet them, you’ll naturally build a wardrobe that will make it easy to put together outfits.

Tip #6: Have A System To Stay Organized

Having a system to keep your wardrobe organized is key to maintaining a perfect closet. You can see what you own with an organized closet. Everything is visible and accessible. When organizing, make sure the pieces you wear regularly are front and center. Occasion dresses or items that no longer fit shouldn’t be the first thing you see when you open your closet. Your everyday pieces in prime view help streamline your routine and make getting dressed effortless.

An organized closet not only makes it easier to put outfits together but also helps you make smarter shopping decisions. You know the pieces you have and what you may be missing. Most importantly, it creates a space that feels calm, intentional, and enjoyable every time you get dressed.

Tip #7: Have A Shopping List

One of the best ways to build your perfect wardrobe is to create a shopping list. I always do this with my clients after we’ve edited and decluttered their closets. Once we know what they own and what they wear, the next step is identifying what’s missing. What are the pieces that would make your wardrobe feel more complete? Are you missing a pair of shoes, a jacket, or a good layering piece? Write those items down and keep them on your shopping list.

When you do shop, start with that list. It keeps you focused and intentional, helping you avoid impulse buys that don’t fit your long-term needs. Remember, having the perfect wardrobe isn’t about owning more. It’s about having the right pieces that truly work for you.

Tip #8: Take Your Time

Take your time when buying new pieces. Before adding anything to your closet, make sure it fits your style and works for your lifestyle. When I’m shopping, I like to slow down and be intentional about finding the right piece. Shopping online makes it so easy to click “add to cart” and buy instantly, but that convenience can lead to impulsive choices and shopping regrets.

Instead, I’ll often add an item to my cart and wait at least 24 – 48 hours. If I’m still thinking about it after that time, it’s usually a good sign it’s worth buying. Also, I always check that the item is returnable, so I’m not stuck with something I don’t love. Next time you’re tempted to make a quick purchase, take a pause. Add it to your cart, then step away. Give yourself a night to decide. Taking that extra time helps ensure every piece you buy is one you’ll truly wear and love.

Tip #9: Know Your Personal Style

Do you know what your personal style is? The clothes that reflect who you are today. Understanding this has been one of the most valuable things in building my perfect wardrobe, and it can be just as transformative for you. There are pieces I would have bought in my 20s or even 30s that no longer resonate with my style today. As we grow and move through different phases of life, our personal style naturally changes too. If you want to create your perfect wardrobe, focus on making sure everything in your closet feels authentic to who you are right now.

Tip #10: Take Care Of Your Clothes

how to find your personal style, fashion advisor

Part of building your perfect wardrobe is maintaining it. Once you’ve created a wardrobe that works for you, the goal is to make it last rather than constantly cycling through new clothes. Taking care of your pieces helps them stay in great condition for years to come. I have items in my closet that are five or even ten years old and still look brand new because I’ve cared for them properly. If something needs to be dry-cleaned, make sure to get it dry-cleaned. If you’re on a budget, hand-wash those items with gentle detergent and hang them to dry.

For dry-clean-only pieces, I usually clean them every three or four wears, depending on how long I’ve worn them. For everything else, I recommend washing them in mesh bags on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent, then hanging them to dry. I even do this with t-shirts. It keeps them looking new and helps them hold their shape.

Building your perfect wardrobe isn’t about buying more. It’s about creating and maintaining it with care and intention. These ten habits have helped me curate a closet I truly love, and I hope they help you do the same.
