A Classic Cardigan for Every Budget

When you think of classic cardigans, there are a few different styles that might come to mind. Cardigans are an all-time layering classic for a reason; they are the easiest piece to wear for cooler mornings and evenings, and simple to store in your bag as the weather warms up. You can style a classic cardigan over dresses, blouses, and even t-shirts for an extra cozy layer of warmth. They also add a textural element to your outfit; the contrast of a knit piece over a silky blouse, a chunky cardigan over a classic band tee.

Whatever your style is, different types of cardigans can work. Most of my favorite types of cardigans you’ll find below. A neutral color is best to start with since it would be the most versatile in your closet and can be worn over other pieces easily. Buttons or no buttons? Long, mid-length, or short? Would you want a belted cardigan or not belted? I have a range of great choices below to fit any budget and style. With so many classic choices, one is bound to fit your capsule wardrobe needs.

Cardigan Style Inspiration

When I think of styling a cardigan, I often think of the classic “t-shirt, jeans, cardigan” look. And while this is a great staple outfit, your capsule wardrobe cardigan can be so much more versatile. For example, take a look at my number 8 pick cardigan. While it could be worn open, it looks so chic buttoned up. You could choose to keep the cardigan buttoned and add slim trousers and classic loafers. The outfit is sleek and elevated.
